A scan happens when someone does it. On a busy day scans get skipped, and it is exactly that shipment someone asks about later. A gate records what passes without anyone being involved, so the gaps in your registration disappear.

At a dock, a doorway or between two zones. Where it ends up standing is the biggest choice.

What to look at when choosing

With a gate the technology is rarely the problem. The placement is.

What passes
A pallet, a roll cage, a person with a box: that sets the height and width
How fast
Walking pace or a forklift at speed. That sets the read window
What stands next to it
Racking right beside the gate gets read along unless you do something about it
Direction
Only registering that something passes, or also whether it goes in or out

What a gate does and what it does not do

  • Record what passes, without anyone doing anything

  • Shield what stands next to the gate: that is what a Faraday cage is for
  • Read what does not come through the gate
  • Guarantee that a tag deep inside a pallet with metal is seen
  • Determine what is inside a box, unless that content is labeled itself

The difference between a gate and a Faraday cage is exactly this: a gate sees everything within range, including the racking next to it. At a dock in an open hall that is no problem; in the middle of a warehouse it is. So where the gate ends up standing is something we settle in the Proof of Value and not on a floor plan.
